PreSchool-Grade 2-Over the years, Hague has re-illustrated many texts that were in the public domain. A number of his books have given new life to overlooked work and have been widely appreciated. His reinterpretation of the work of Potter, however, is egregiously unnecessary. Potter wanted her books to be small enough for little hands to hold. Hague's book is almost twice as large. Potter's book has softly colored spot illustrations, honing in beautifully on the drama or emotions of the facing pages of text. Hague's art is overblown with extraneous details that threaten to overwhelm the plot. His rabbits with enormous eyes are reminiscent of those kitschy, large-eyed waifs popularized by the Keans in the 1960s. If Potter's books were out of print, or in danger of becoming so, one might be more receptive to Hague's version, but they are readily available and hard, if not impossible, to improve upon. You've come to the right place. With the English Through Stories Podcast, you will improve your English by listening to a fun, entertaining story each week. You'll learn new idioms and expressions and learn to use them the way native speakers do. No more "textbook English"!

Each English Through Stories Podcast lasts 10-20 minutes, and has three parts:

1. A review or “recap” of the story so far (the previous episodes)

2. A chapter of the story

3. An explanation of some of the expressions and phrases used in Part 2

The podcasts are all recorded at a speed you can understand—clearly and comprehensibly. This way, you'll be able to actually understand the English you hear, and pick up the meanings of new words and phrases.

You may not understand everything the first time you hear it, but if you listen to it a couple of times, you will find that your comprehension will increase significantly.

English Through Stories is brought to you free every week by the Center for Educational Development, in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Jeff McQuillan is the host of the podcasts. Dr. McQuillan was a university professor of applied linguistics and education for many years, and has taught English as a Second Language at several colleges and universities.
