Zadie Smith's admiration of E.M. Foster's Howards End is clear from the first line of her On Beauty, although she hasnt openly expressed it elsewhere. It would be wrong to call this novel simpl an updated version of Foster' s novel , though, as relationships have been altered and new themes have been introduced. However, the central issues of Howards End are the conflict between two families of opposing political abd moral opinions, and issues of class and ambition in a society based on strict rules. These are also the framework that supports Smith' s exceptional novel. To recreate the divided society Foster' s early 20th-century England, Smith has chosen an American university outside Boston, quite similar to Harvard, where Foster worked for a while. She has added an extra dimension to Foster' s examination of class by also looking at race and nationality.
