Saadet Çadır 1st October 2007, 23:06 Do you believe that people's names (I mean their real names) can also tell about their personality?
For example; do you think people named x usually have similar characteristics of personality?
I have tested it with people I know and it has usually worked if I know some other people with that name .
Here comes an example;
People named Erol are usually honest, humble, sociable and they usually like sharing, helping ,they are responsible people and they do well in their job no matter what their job is.
(Of course there are exceptions but usually they have these features )
What do you think ? Any example ? Have you ever tried ? Can you try now?
P.S : Only good features (or the ones which do not have any offensive meaning )are allowed with any name !

As I ve known you for a long time, I don t want to say anything but all good things in the world ,but let me guess about Nazlıs if you know anybody , check if it works;
Nazlıs are not easy people to get along with, they are really a bit NAZLI but usually not in a childish manner, let s say they are a bit capricious; They are friends for life if you can reach them , but if you can t, they will never know you , they are good inside and emotional enough but not like showing these blah blah .... :)
Does it work?

Saposcat 1st October 2007, 23:44 I suppose this works a lot less with names in English, where the meanings of names are so hidden in the mists of history that not many people know (or care) what their name means.
MehmetDEU 1st October 2007, 23:45 I have known so many people whose names are just in the opposite way to their characters and qualities. However, I also have some examples to the point that you deal with. For instance, I had a student whose name was Nadir. I really "rarely" saw him:).

Saposcat 1st October 2007, 23:53 for example what Tom means in turkish I wonder much?have you any idea?
"Tom" (short for "Thomas") comes from the Aramaic language and means "twin".
Saadet Çadır 1st October 2007, 23:58 I suppose this works a lot less with names in English, where the meanings of names are so hidden in the mists of history that not many people know (or care) what their name means.
In any language there are names which are beyond their literary meanings as they get their meanings from their owners. We all know that there are names given to people(sometimes considering their meanings sometimes regardless of what they mean but to name people ) and there are people giving names their meanings.:)
Miss 2nd October 2007, 00:11 I have known so many people whose names are just in the opposite way to their characters and qualities.
and i want to addict something to this subject. i know a woman whose name is sakine but she isn't calm she talks a lot and she is very active :D
BBurak 2nd October 2007, 00:12 and i want to addict something to this subject. i know a woman whose name is sakine but she isn't calm she talks a lot and she is very active :D
so lets call her,''dırdırcı sakine '' :D as most of women's second name ....
Saposcat 2nd October 2007, 00:16 i know a woman whose name is sakine but she isn't calm she talks a lot and she is very active :D
And I used to know a very quiet, calm, steady, etc. young woman whose name was (and still is, I would guess) Eylem Top. I would call her "Action Ball" for fun.
MehmetDEU 2nd October 2007, 00:19 I have a neighbor in my hometown; her name is Şemsiye. She hitherto could not help us protect ourselves from heavy rains.
PS: I know Şemsi (masculine) and Şemsiye (feminine), though. Just kidding.
MehmetMamger 2nd October 2007, 00:32 Actually it depends on the culture and family. In some cultures, the name is the first prayer, first intention and general expectation for your baby. It shows what you want your baby to be. And a parent's desire can shape a kid's thought, feelings and personality.
For example I made up my kids' names considering a phrase in Quran: Amel-i salih. My daughter's name, Güleylem, means, to me:
Gül: Rose, symbolizes Muhammad (AS) in tasavvuf, represents beauty and romance in literature, means AŞK (love) in poetry. It also means "smile".
Eylem: Action and demonstration, means both doing ST and protesting ST.
Thus Güleylem means someone who does something good, who protests against something bad, and who does do both of these like a prophet: For love, romantically and beautifully, with a big smile on the face.
So can you say me please, isn't it possible that my desire and expectation may affect my kid's feelings, thought and personality at least to some extent?

Of course they can especially after naming your daughter considering so many things in one :)and what I mean is that in one way or another people with the same names share some similar characteristics of personality to some extend and as I haven t known anybody having such a beautiful name as your daughter does, I won t be able to say anything (but I m sure she will have all these features considering his father), on the other hand I can tell you something about Mehmets :)

You gotta hear my son's name, Yaremir, which also means Amel-i Salih. :)
As to Mehmet, my name must have picked under the excitement of Cyprus war. Of course it means Muhammad but also reminds Mehmetçik. Religional and national. I consider myself as Hakperver and vatanperver, so to some extent my name may have affected my feelings and the way I think. :) However, it is the most common male name in Turkey, which is followed by Ahmet, my father's name. :) I always like to look like someone in the crowd; it fits my situation too. :)
