**This is my first attempt to write a summary as long as this.I hope you like it.Cheers

General Info
The book tells us France of 1800's.The writer put the quotes from the era's intellectual's (and sometimes from anonymouses) on the top of each chapter.These quotes,actually,sums up the qualities of the chapter.
The writer not only introduces us the era wtih names he gives,but also interferes in the novel and gives his personal ideas sometimes.
If we are to look on generally,novel is the critical of 1800's' France.

Julien Sorel,Governer Rênal,Madam de Rênal,Priest Pirard,Foqué,Marquis de La Mole,Mademoiselle de La Mole.
Summary
The events get start in a town called Verries.This is a quiet town which is nearby Doubs river but it has some tricks inside.Julien's story starts with his going to Governer Rênal's house as a worker.Julien Sorel,who is last son of a poor carpenter,is an ambitious and brilliant boy.He learns the Bible by heart on his own and in that way,he learns Latin.Also,with the help of a doctor he met before,he meets the books of era's enlightened people and he is devoted to them madly.Owing to his admiration of Napoléon Bonaparte and his poorness in contrast,he has a passion of getting high.Thanks to his knowledge about Latin and his characteristics he succeeds to draw attention.Nevertheless,the era of 19th century is the century of dukes,seniors,counts,bishops,briefly,aristocratics and it's a small possibility to get a high position for a man from folk.Julien,who sets his mind on being rich,at the expense of being in contradiction with himself inside,prefers to be double-faced and starts to walk on the way of being a priest.He makes his first step by going to Governer Rênal's house as a Latin teacher for his sons.His friendship with the Madame de Rênal who is ten years older than Julien and wife of Rênal turns into a deep love more and more.While Julien actually refuses to believe in this love inside because of his reaction against nobles and starts to use Madame de Rênal as a step for getting high to some extent,Madame de Rênal feels for him truly and madly.The chracteristics Julien has causes him not only drawing attention but also being jealous of.Speaking of Madame de Rênal,she only interests in him.But her feeling guilty for cheating her husband and sinning makes her think god is punishing her when her little son falls ill. That's why she starts to ignore Julien for all she can do.When the rumours about them which emerged by the maid Elisa who is also in love with Julien is heard by Rênal,Julien is sent to the school of ministry in Besançon in a helter-skelter way.He gets some enemies who have a grudge against him because of jealousy and fall in a depression in loneliness.Anyhow,he gains appreciation of some priests and bishops while some of them hates him.He meets here with the man who will change his life,the priest Pirard.When the life in ministry school becomes unbearable,with the offer of a friend of Pirard's named Marquis de La Mole,Pirard and Julien goes to Paris.Pirard attends to a ministry and Julien starts to work for Marquis de La Mole as his assistant in the mansion of La Mole.In this way,Julien goes a step further.However,he falls in love with the daughter of La Mole,Mademoiselle de La Mole.She is a different girl who is as interesting as Julien.She loves reading books by enlightened people like Julien and has a structure which can't drink in the realities of the era.For this,her care for Julien turns into a love which is in a vicious circle.She loves the cool man-side and courage of him.However,everytime Julien shows his love for her,she ignores and escapes from him because of the social statute of him,also she causes him to suffer.After a while,Mademoiselle de La Mole gets pregnant and tell her father about her desire to get married with Julien.He gets shocked and opposes this marriage at first.Later he becomes persuaded under some terms.Although everything is okey,a mail from Madam de Rênal who can't forget her love arrives to La Mole and with the negative things she has written,everything gets ruined.Hereupon,Julien goes to the church on the ceremony day and shoots Madam de Rênal two times and one of the bullets is embedded in her shoulder.So,Julien gets arrested.Julien who learns that when Madam de Rênal told she couldn't bear anymore and did that thing for her desire for death,notices that his love for Madam de Rênal grows stronger more and more and Mademoiselle de La Mole becomes ordinary for him anyway.He finds peace for the first time in his life with the visits of Madam de Rênal while he's resting in his chamber in prison.He persistently tells to court in spite of the efforts of Madam de Rênal and Mademoiselle de La Mole to save him that he planned all the thing and shot her intentionally and nobody can turn aside him of his determination.He is a very proud man and prefers going through guillotine to being humiliated in front of his enemies.Also his ambition has gone off after all the things he lived and he has got tired of acting all the time.At the end,our fiction character loses his life with the guillotine and Madam de Rênal dies after a while because of her sorrow.
A Note About the Name of The Book
I think,Red refers to Madam de Rênal (tranquility,sincerity,tenderness) and Black refers to Mademoiselle de La Mole (passion,games,desperation)
