Why?

;)
Ps: Short answer is never accepted;)
MehmetDEU 9th September 2007, 00:17 Actually, none of them but all of them:). I mean, the combination of all of them should be applied. All of these approaches have different aims and different histories; i.e., they were applied for different purposes. But, none of them fits into our education system solely. It differs considering the age of the students, the purpose of the learners and the background of the learners etc...
IcySeden 9th September 2007, 00:19 I think the best one is social activities.(I mean every title you've written except silent way)
A person can never improve his/her language by only studying grammer. It's the basic, then you have to open yourself to new actions. If you ask me,I gained the basic in primary school and also in preparatory class and then did a little about grammer. The films i watched with its original sound, the books i read, the people i listened and tried to talk sometimes, gave me the improvement.I have a long way to go,but i could completed a part of it by activities.
Also writing in the language we're learning is very useful.I resurrected my capability of writing only after i started to write something in the forum.
This wasn't short,was it :)
Heart_Broken 9th September 2007, 00:20 Bir dili en iyi şekilde öğrenmek için kitap okumak dolayısıyla o kültürü öğrenmek önemli bence. Loyalty 9th September 2007, 00:25 All right!
Which one is prefered most in Turkey? Why?
If one of them is not enogh, what should we use as a combination? ;)
Mediha 9th September 2007, 00:29 In Turkey, generally, GTM is preferred. Unfortunately :(
MehmetDEU 9th September 2007, 00:33 The answer is very brief:). Sometimes we ask "why can't we learn a foreign language". The answer is that for years, TPR and Grammar Translation Method have been applied (sometimes without considering or knowing any others). So the teachers were controllers; not facilitators and expect the students react just like Pawlow's dogs:D. Communicative skills should be improved, and any of the approaches which handle them should be applied.
Loyalty 9th September 2007, 00:45 I think the conditions in our country, especially, in terms of exam format, have enforced us to use Grammer Translation Method. For instance, YDS, KPDS or ÜDS require us to obtain reading and grammer knowledge. Thus, nolens volens, we have to direct in to Grammer Translation Method.
On the other hand, an American or an English does not take consideration into grammer. Does he/ She?
In my opinion, in due course, we may use all of them, a little bit, alittle bit. ;)
Dear Saposcat,
What is your opinion?

Unfortunately, this is the case. And it can be seen in the YDS (the only one of those tests I know anything about) by the extremely narrow-minded view of grammar which leads to a plethora of mistakes on the exam. If you ask me, the whole system needs to be thrown to the garbage and started over again from scratch in a way that will actually work.

For the most part, no. Of course, grammar is learned to a certain extent (and can't, of course, really be avoided in learning another language) ... but the emphasis in the United States—I can't speak for Britain, and probably have little right to speak for the entire United States, either—tends to be on actually understanding and actually communicating, whether or not the grammar is "correct".

Almost everyone but the government in here thinks like that anyway. But how can be it changed  It's the simpliest way you know..
Teacher.Derya 9th September 2007, 01:22 which approach is the best? actually it depends. depends on what? the purpose of the students, the needs of the students. for examlple, if the student wants to learn a language to know about ithe language, to lear grammar rules, GTM would be perfect.
in my opinion all of the aproaches should be mixed to some extent, depending on the topic as well. for example to teach imperatives there is not any alternative to TPR.
I think language learning should be for communiacation, so should teaching. teachers should teach the language, not about it. I am in favor of any communicative approach.
finally the approach used in Turkey is mostly GTM. I am one of those unlucky people who tries to learn English. I know grammar very well but I am sometimes having difficulty in communicaring.
thats all for now.
IcySeden 9th September 2007, 01:33 When we were studying at preparatory class,we used to use different ways of learning Eng.
Every day,in the first lesson, our teacher used to want us to tell what we had done the previous day or at weekend. So,a group of students which were eager to learn Eng. including me,started to tell with their weak Eng.But later,by speaking for a few minutes every day and getting corrected by the teacher we started to improve ourselves. Also we were writing something for homework,we were preparing projects and doing group-work.We were also watching films, reading books, etc. Besides, the teacher used to give us many worksheets every day to improve our grammar and knowledge of words. So,i lived my golden age of learning English that year.We were getting tired of these thing but it was the best way and i can notice now.I wish, every teacher prepared his/her students in that way.
