I guess not many people here will know much about the sport of baseball, so dear to my own heart, and so none will know about baseball player Satchel Paige, one of the greatest players ever, who was kept out of baseball's major leagues for most of his life due to the fact that he was black.
But besides being a phenomenal baseball player, he was a wise man, and his six "Rules for Staying Young" have become a part of American folklore, especially the sixth one, which virtually everyone in the United States knows well. I present his rules here as not only an example of cool wisdom, but also as a nice little look at bits of spoken English in action.
1) Avoid fried meats which angry up the blood.
2) If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts.
3) Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gently as you move.
4) Go very light on the vices, such as carrying on in society—the social ramble ain't restful.
5) Avoid running at all times.
6) And don't look back—something might be gaining on you.
