Alexandria ,one of the many cities of that name established by Alexander the Great,was founded in 332 B.C. and replaced Memphis as the capital of ancient Egypt.It rapidly became political and commercial centre of eastern Mediterranean,and was for long a great centre of hellenistic culture .The royal sector covered a third of the city.In this sector were also the royal tombs from the time of Alexander the Great onwards.The city retained its importance for over a thousand years,under Greeks,Romans,Arabs,but its decline started with the development of the new searoute to the East round the Cape of Good Hope.The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 helped restore its former importance,though Mohammed Ali had already done much to revive the port in the early years of the century.
