It was inhabited by people / it was filled with people carrying letters :))

beget--past form begat = to become a father of a child (old use)

If you re preparing for YDS ,I advise you not to read such novels but to read the ones written in modern English and the news especially the news broadcast in BBC site because that English will not do you any good for YDS but if it is just for pleasure go ahead and enjoy it:))
